On December 2, the group draw for the European Football Championship 2024 took place at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. The final draw also took place at the same time in the Port of Hamburg: The results of the draw were recreated live at O’Swaldkai by employees of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG using containers in the colours of the participating countries
In an unprecedented event, employees of the HHLA subsidiary UNIKAI recreated the group stage draw in real time with a total of 24 20-foot containers on the northern tip of the O’Swaldkai multi-purpose terminal. Each of the six towers of four country flag containers represents a group of the UEFA Euro 2024, which starts on June 14, 2024. The installation can be seen from the plaza of the Elbphilharmonie as well as from the entire southern bank of HafenCity.
Using twelve reach stackers (container stackers), employees of HHLA subsidiary UNIKAI, which specializes in handling rolling cargo, lifted the designed containers into position. And they did so in front of the Elbphilharmonie concert hall in the evening, where the ceremonial draw took place at the same time.
The twelve-metre high container structure on the northern tip of O’Swaldkai will be visible to all Hamburg residents and visitors from all over the world until mid-December.
